Wow who knew that so soon after I set this thing up I would have something big to write about? So this past weekend for my family has been quite exciting to say the least. So most of you know that Ashley is an avid horsewoman. She loves to ride and is a good rider. Saturday afternoon, she went out and saddled her horse went for a ride, then came back and got the boys and took them for a ride, then came back and decided that she was going to run the barrels in the back pasture area. She had been out there for about an hour or so (it's about 3 in the afternoon) and the phone rings. Guy answers the phone then almost immediately throws the phone and runs out the door into the back yard. I was getting ready for work so I grabbed some flip-flops and took off after him. I got the back door and saw Ashley's horse Thumper walking around with no Ashley on his back. I said to myself oh crap this can't be good. I ran after Guy going through all the gates to get to her, she was laying flat on her back, with her left arm at kind of a weird angle. So we get back to her and Guy says "she broke her arm, I'm going to go and get the car and pull it back here, she can't get up and walk". I walk back to be by her and I lay down next to her in the field (in the dried up horse poop and everything, I must love this girl). Guy goes and gets his car and drives it back to where we are we get Ashely up and into the car and off Guy and Ashley go to the ER at Davis Hospital.
On the way to the hospital, Ashley starts to complain about her neck hurting really bad, and it was getting to be difficult for her to breath. Guy gets her to the hospital and they X-ray her arm and yep it's broken, her humorous has a compound fracture. Then they do a chest X-ray and tell us that she also has a broken rib, contusions on her lung, and her one lung was partially collapsed and they were going to move her to a different hospital where they could watch her more carefully. So she gets to ride in an ambulance to Ogden Regional Medical Center which is a level 2 trauma center. They finally get her into a room about 945 on Saturday night. Guy spent the night with her that night and said that she was really uncomfortable, and still in quite a bit of pain. On Sunday the discussion came up as to whether is would be better for Ashley to have a gravity cast on her arm, or to have surgery and put a plate in her arm. The cast would be on her arm for at least 8 weeks, and then it would be another 2-4 months after that before her arm would be back to normal. The surgery would be about an hour and while it would hurt more at first around the surgery site she will heal faster, and be able to use her arm again sooner.
Guy and Melissa (Ashley's mom) talk and decide that the surgery will be the best for her as she is too active to be immobile for more than 2 months. So Ashley had the surgery on Sunday afternoon. That night her mom spent the night at the hospital with her. Monday morning Guy and I went back up to the hospital and our Ashley was back, she was doped up on pain meds, but she was smiling and laughing with us. During her stay she had several chest X-ray's to check on her lungs. But Monday morning her lungs had stabilized and the Dr said that if everything was good she would get to go home the next morning. Well everything went well and Ashley is now home, safe and sound. She is still in some pain from the surgery, but she is glad to be home. She will be out of school for the rest of the week, but we did go to the school and get her homework for her so she can be working on that.
We did find out what had happened, Thumper was getting tired and Ashely was trying to turn him to go back in the barn, the shortest distance was to turn him left and head back, however, the bit that she was using he doesn't like to turn left with, so he got mad and reared up, when he did that Ashley tightened her grip on the reign's and her momentum combined with his pulled them over backwards. Thumper landed on top of Ashley and then rolled off her. Ashley caught her breath, the reached in her pocket and called home on her cell phone. That is the reader's digest condensed version of the story. :)
